1. Promotion of Inclusive Education

EducationQuality education is every child’s right. Universal Primary Education by 2015 – this is the 2nd Millennium Development Goal agreed by every country but it will be achieved if it reaches all children, including children with disabilities. In Uganda, most schools have Universal Primary Education but this is not enough to see every child at school.Quality education is every child’s right. 2. HIV/AIDS and childhood disability

The global pandemic of HIV/AIDS has now entered its third decade. The impact of HIV/AIDS on individuals, families’ communities and the nation is increasing drastically and it has affected individuals and families physically, socially psychologically, emotionally and economically. Therefore every individual has a responsibility to guard against HIV infection, to fight its spread and to support those who are infected and affected in different ways. 3. Parent and community participation

Just as in most African countries, the tradition of importance of a family to development of a child has always thrived in Uganda. KCH empowers parents and community members to support the rehabilitation of CWDs. We realize that holistic community participation brings positive change to the lives of CWDs. At KCH, we also encourage parents of CWDs to form Parents Learning Committees (PLCs) where they share information and knowledge hence managing to cope about childhood disability.Besides empowering parents and communities, we also emphasize on building the capacities of local health professionals to increase on their ability in providing rehabilitative care to CWDs at the local health centers.

4. Livelihood and Economic Empowerment Program

Poverty is not simply lack of income; it is denial of fundamental freedom and opportunity to develop as a human being. There is a vicious cycle of poverty causing disability and disability causing poverty. Families of children with disability often require more human and financial resources for support, such as medicines, rehabilitation and transport. Besides these direct costs, children with disabilities are often excluded by society and those living in chronic poverty often have limited access to healthcare, clean water, nutritious food, shelter, education and employment.

5. Health and Rehabilitation

Disability is a major public health concern worldwide and the situation for children with disabilities is even more serious. Approximately one-third of the world’s disabled population is children and many of these disabling conditions are preventable.

In Uganda, one the foremost causes of disability is infectious and communicable disease; the incidence of these diseases have been greatly reduced or eliminated in higher income countries.

Many children with disabilities have little access to basic health services and rehabilitative care. Children with disabilities supported by KCH undergo medical and social rehabilitation with consideration of parental involvement.

6. Advocacy, Policy Research and Campaigns

This is a very exciting year for KCH; It is a year we are making 40 years of dedication to providing the disabled community with quality, affordable and sustainable services with focused attention to children with disabilities and their families. As we mark 40 of existence, we are carrying out an awareness campaign through music concerts as a way of engaging policy makers, private sector and stakeholders to appreciate childhood disability.

7. Food Security and Nutrition

One of the core functions of KCH is to provide food security and nutrition to CWDs and their families. However, more focus is laid on children with disabilities with malnutrition challenges.

In addition to the nutritional programme run at KCH, families of CWDs are provided with farm seeds to ensure continuous food supply for CWDs and their families. Nutritional aspects are one of the major factors to consider during rehabilitation of children with disabilities.

8. Facilitating access to quality  assistive devices and mobility aids

For most people with disability, access is a major challenge that limits their movements and full participation in day to day activities and presents many barriers to children with disabilities. Though focus is on the rehabilitation of Children with disabilities, KCH also produces appliances and mobility aids for adults hence providing an opportunity to people with disabilities to participate in their communities by supporting them with appropriate mobility aids and appliances.
