Promotion of Inclusive Education
Quality education is every child’s right. Universal Primary Education by 2015 – this is the 2nd Millennium Development Goal agreed by every country but it will be achieved if it reaches all children, including children with disabilities. In Uganda, most schools have Universal Primary Education but this is not enough to see every child at school. Most schools in Uganda continue to prohibit CWDs from attending schools, they are still being stigmatized and discriminated and are not given an opportunity to learn. Millions of CWDs around the world are excluded from mainstream education.
At KCH, we promote inclusive education for CWDs and we sensitize communities about the importance of education to CWDs. We believe that inclusion of CWDs in society is an essential element in development. KCH supports children with disabilities to access inclusive education through a catch up class at KCH run for children undergoing intensive rehabilitation and the support of children with disabilities in mainstream schools. The class was greatly improved with the formation of an Individual Child Literacy Support (ICLS) Team that includes an Occupational therapist, Physiotherapist, Social worker, Special Needs Education teacher and Parent who together plan and manage individual children’s literacy programmes. The analysis by the Individual Child Literacy Support (ICLS) Team suggests that children need psychosocial support alongside learning. This year, we started an Early Learning Centre for children with learning challenges to prepare them for mainstream learning.
